Professor of Art,
I hold the BFA and MFA Degrees in Painting from The University of South Carolina, and the MA Degree in Illustration from Syracuse University. I've completed additional coursework at the Rhode Island School of Design and at Parsons School of Design. I’m currently Professor of Art and Chair of the Communication and Arts Department at Benedict College.
I was formally trained as a painter, but was always more in love with the tactile qualities of the paint and canvas than with the concerns of painting. Historically, my work has always been nonobjective and formalistic. For years my work explored the multi-juxtapositions of shapes, colors and textures, along with tensions created between media and surfaces. My current work is entitled the “Heredity Series”, which embodies mixed media renderings based on vintage family photos.
My presentation will
consist of a slide show that chronicales my work over the past forty years. In addition I will bring in actual work and discuss the process of my new series.
